Acne is a chronic inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands. It occurs when excess sebum becomes trapped within the gland and skin bacteria multiplies within the clogged pores.
Acne can be treated with oral and/or topical therapies, including antibiotics, topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid preparations. Additional procedures such as acne peels and extractions can enhance the response to medication. A common fallacy is that acne is caused by dirt, sweets, and greasy foods prompting many parents to encourage their children to scrub their faces and avoid such things as chocolate and burgers. But, in reality, acne vulgaris is mostly an inherited tendency that is triggered by the change in hormones that occurs during adolescence.
Great strides have been made in improving acne scars and pitting with the use of laser skin resurfacing, dermabrasion, local surgery and skin fillers.
Rosacea is also an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands It typically occurs in an older patient, can be associated with greater facial redness and is aggravated by such things as spicy foods, alcohol, and hot beverages.
Patients who suffer from rosacea benefit from regimens of topical and sometimes oral therapies. In addition dilated blood vessels in the face can be collapsed from specifically programmed wavelengths of light from vascular lasers.
The importance of early treatment for acne or rosacea conditions must be emphasized. Early treatment avoids progression of the conditions and permanent scarring to the face.
